Default on America Act
April 26, 2023 | H.R. 2811
The Default on America Act is an extremist proposal that uses the threat of defaulting on our nation's debt to force a vote on legislation that would make major funding cuts for essential programs and economic investments. This bill prioritizes the wishes of extreme members of Congress at the expense of working families who need more, not less, programmatic support in their fight for better wages, affordable healthcare, and retirement security. This bill would cut funding for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to $274 million. Cuts to Social Security Administration would result in the need to close field offices and reduce opening hours, increasing waiting times for some determinations by 30 percent. Specific cuts to Medicaid would limit the access of retirees and millions of others, to receive assistance through programs that provide them with nutrition services, determine their eligibility for Medicaid, and supply access to health centers. Further, this legislation would result in vital cuts to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), including funding to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), that would hinder the agency’s ability to provide services to taxpayers, effectively enforce tax laws, restore staffing levels, and provide more than $200 billion in tax revenue over 10 years by cracking down on wealthy tax evaders and corporations who cheat on their taxes.
This is Bad for working people.
